Hospitals generally staff NICU positions with registered nurses who already have experience in other areas of nursing. NICU nurses work mainly in hospitals in conjunction with respiratory therapists, neonatologists, and advanced practice nurses.

Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) are registered nurses who provide care and treatment to women before, during and after childbirth.
