What is a … phlebotomist?
It’s a bloody job. Really! Phlebotomists are clinical laboratory technicians who draw blood from people for tests, transfusions, donations, and research. They also perform diagnostic procedures on blood samples and interpret the results. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for skilled phlebotomists is expected to be larger than the supply of qualified applicants over the next few years.
Phlebotomists work in the laboratories of hospitals, clinics, and doctors’ offices. Education and certification requirements vary from state to state; in general, phlebotomists have high school diplomas and specialized training from a technical/community college or an allied health agency. Many people start out as phlebotomists and continue their education to become medical or clinical laboratory technicians or scientists.
